Why you should choose Bespoke over High-street Stores

November 27th, 2012 No comments

High-street stores offer people a quick fix. They have the expensive suits and the “cheaper” suits. They have a variety of suits, well work and evening – not exactly a variety. They have material that could be a lot better and they have a sizing system that means you have to try on every suit you ever want to buy from them.

So what has Bespoke got that’s better?

Bespoke means that the suit you buy is tailor made to your body shape and size.
No more having to squeeze your shoulders into a jacket too small. Or buy a size too big to be able to do up the buttons around your stomach. Having the baggy bottoms on your trousers so they fit around the waist – this issue is GONE with Bespoke.

Mark at Langley Priory 034 300x200 Why you should choose Bespoke over High street Stores

Double Breasted Satin Collar Dinner Suit by Rupert the Tailor

Your jacket will fit perfectly on the shoulders, you can do up the buttons by your stomach, your trousers will be comfy and fit properly around your bum. The arms and legs will be the right length and you will look fantastic! You will also feel it as a suit that fits is comfy!

Bespoke also offer a better choice of materials and colours – well you can choose to have whatever you want really…

High-street stores tend to stick to the safer options of Navy, Black and Charcoal. The regular 3.

Bespoke allows you to have the suit you want in Pinstripes, self-stripes any stripes.

High-street has fixed styles – you want a 2 button suit – “Sorry Sir, we only have a 3 button”.

Bespoke means if you want a 2 button suit, that’s what you get.

If you want more buttons on the sleeve, if you want brace buttons instead of belt loops, if you want a hole in your lapel, if you want the extra ticket pocket – all of these you can have, you just have to ask. You can’t do this in a high-street store.

So Bespoke is better than the High-street, why?

You get a better fit, better material and a much better suit for a little more cost.

Where can you get them from? Rupert the Tailor!

SuitsMen’s new Bespoke side to the website Rupert the Tailor is Simplicity in Bespoke clothing.

Nehru Suit by Rupert the Tailor

We have styles already done, with colours and materials sorted. You choose your suit, jacket or trousers, give us your measurements and we make the perfect suit for you.

Our measurement guide is clear and simple to use – but please measure yourselves! Your favourite pair of trousers may be a 36” waist, but lay them flat measure them across the waistband and double the measurement, you may find them not to be a 36” at all… (high-street sizing for you)

Save your measurements with us so next time you come all you need to do is choose your next item.

And if you want any extra details adding to the suit, just let us know. We can put any extra pockets, buttons or even change the lining colour if you want.

For that little extra cost you can get the perfect suit, so why put up with the ‘Ok’ fitting from the high-street when you don’t have to.

Button Sizes, easy to understand?

September 21st, 2012 No comments

Having to know what size button to get is not an everyday occurrence for people. Unless of course you are a tailor, or are in the clothing manufacturing industry. For many, we know when we need a small button, or when we need a big button. Or that shirts have smaller buttons than coats. But I doubt we could tell what their size was, or even know how to measure one.

So when I was asked, how do you measure a button? I, of course, thought I could pull out a tape measure and find the measurement I needed easily.

How wrong I was…

Buttons 300x200 Button Sizes, easy to understand?

After trying and failing to correctly measure numerous buttons, I decided to find out the professional and proper way of measuring buttons. But instead of information and knowledge, I was confused and muddled by the way that this was done.

Button measuring is one of the most complicated things I have ever seen for what should be a nice simple task.

It all starts around the 9th Century where German Button makers started to use the French term ‘Ligne’ as the measurement instead of inches. This was generally shortened down to ‘L’.

The concensous definition is that a Ligne was the measurement of a rounded wick, folded flat.

For those of you (like me) who don’t know what a rounded wick is, here is a definition. A rounded wick is a wick used for an oil lamp or other sources that is hollow.

The wick would be pressed flat, and then used to measure the size of a button.

One Ligne, roughly measures 1/40 of an inch. So a button that measures ½ an inch, would actually measure 20 Ligne.

Capture 300x247 Button Sizes, easy to understand?

The Ligne system is still in use today for the measurement of buttons, and it is still used by French and Swiss wristwatch makers to measure the size of a watch movement.

For such a simple thing as Buttons, I couldn’t believe the complex measurement system behind them.

If you know of any other interesting ways of measuring buttons, or clothing items let us know. Either comment on our Facebook page, send us a Tweet or email us here.

We love to learn new things in the office.

Do you find it hard to find a suit that fits?

September 5th, 2012 No comments

For many people buying a suit that is ‘off the rail’ from a high street store is perfectly fine, the jacket may be slightly too long, but not so long that it needs to be altered, or the trousers may be slightly too big on the thighs.

However, there are those who cannot just go out and buy a ready-made suit. The reason could be one of many, their profession, hobby or lifestyle. But it is all because of the same factor ‘Body Shape’.

Take Cyclists and Water-skiers for instance. Finding a suit jacket is the same for them as everybody else, it may be slightly too long on the body or ½ an inch to big on the chest. However finding trousers to fit can be a painstaking task.

People who have bigger thigh muscles and calf muscles than the average person, be it through sport or hobby can find it difficult to get trousers to fit them the way suit trousers should.

This is where SuitsMen’s new Bespoke service ‘Rupert the Tailor’ can help.

Simplicity in Bespoke Clothing

August 28th, 2012 No comments

Many people choose to buy ‘off the rail’ suits due to the fact that buying a bespoke suit is a) hard and confusing and b) expensive.

But it doesn’t have to be.

Here at SuitsMen we have created our own Bespoke Suit range, ‘Rupert the Tailor’. We aim to make buying your own made to measure suit as easy and as simple as possible.

We have created suits with all of the awkward questions already answered…What shaped lapels do you want? How many buttons? Real or standard sleeves?

We don’t ask you any of this, because we put together the standard suits for you, with all the traditional aspects on that suit that it needs. (If you do want anything different, we can do that for you too, just ask)

Measurements

You don’t have to go to a tailor to be measured; we have put an easy to follow guide on the website to enable you to measure yourself in the comfort of your own home. Each measurement has clear instructions on how and where to measure to and from. No confusion and no stress.

All of these measurements are put on our system and saved so you don’t need to remember them or keep them safe. We do this for you. It also means next time you come on the site the sizes are already there, all you need to do is pick the suit!

Prices

We are also not charging over the top prices, we are offering superbly fitting suits with quality fabrics at a realistic price.

Fitting

Now I bet you’re thinking ‘but what if it doesn’t fit? Well we have thought of that too, and any alterations that may need doing can be done by our very own Tailor.

Buying Bespoke clothing doesn’t have to be stressful, so if you want a great fitting suit to your measurements try one of our ‘Rupert the Tailor’ suits.

What do you think about buying without being able to try on?

January 26th, 2012 No comments

The aspect of buying something without being able to handle it, feel the material, try it on for size and get different opinions puts many off buying clothing off the internet.

Especially if it’s an expensive suit.

Gadgets and advice have been put onto websites to ensure that customers can where possible buy the right size.

But sometimes a chart or estimated size doesn’t help that much at all.

There could be ‘Virtual Fitting Rooms’. Where you can see a model in ‘your’ size wearing the clothes to help you imagine what it would look like. You could even put up a picture of yourself.

But these can be complicated and frustrating if they won’t load on your computer. They are also very expensive for the company to run.

Now, putting in your size is easy enough, with the information on ‘how to’. But sometimes people do idealize their shape, pulling in their stomach when measuring around the waist. This only means the suit jacket may be tight when you finally get it.

Or standing up broad and tall when normally you have a slight slouch, this could lead to the wrong size being ordered and therefore an ill-fitting suit.

Here at suitsmen, we have clear size charts with our products telling you the back length, arm lengths and various other lengths of the items you are looking at. As well as diagrams to help you visualise what to do.

We also clearly state how to and where to measure these lengths from, so you can do it yourself at home, and all you would need is a tape measure.

Not only that, but our system also saves the sizes you have ordered. So next time when you log on, if you ordered a 44” Regular jacket and 40” Regular (31”) length trousers, then these would be highlighted for you on the products you choose.

And if you still don’t understand, or don’t know which to choose, you can just give us a call on 01335 361287 and we will help you pick the perfect size.

Our FREE delivery and FREE returns also means it doesn’t cost you anything if the suit or item is not right. (Within the UK)

For any more information or advice call 01335 361287, or email support@suitsmen.co.uk and we will help in any way we can.

Do you know what Length and Size Suit to get? No…

December 15th, 2011 No comments

Many people buy the wrong sized suits. And I’m not just talking about chest size and waist size. I mean those you see with a jacket that seems far too long, or the trousers with the socks showing.

But if there is no size chart on the suit which tells you what size jacket to buy for your height, how do you know what size to buy??

So here at Suitsmen, we have put together a rough guide line, of heights to Jacket Lengths. Not only should this help you decide which jacket length you should get, but also which one will look the best on you.

SuitsMen logo 300x129 Do you know what Length and Size Suit to get? No…

So if you are 5’7” or under…

You are put into the ‘Short’ Category. This jacket is one inch shorter in the length of the jacket and in the arm length.

5’8” to 5’10”…

You are our regulars. Any standard length Jacket is perfect for you.

5’11” and Over…

Now you may not think you are tall, but you have been put into the ‘Long’ category. These jackets are one inch longer in back length and sleeve length than the regular jackets. Giving you just a bit more coverage.

But what about…

Now I know some of you will have other questions and queries,

I am in the regular category, but I have long arms, what should I do??

You could buy the Long Jacket, however this may look slightly too long on the body. The other option would be to have the regular jacket and show off your smart double cuff shirt underneath with some sophisticated cuff links. Some people even prefer to wear their jackets like that.

Do the length of the back and the arm length change with chest size too?

For a regular jacket, there would be slight changes in length throughout the sizes. Not as obvious as changing to a short or long, but the arms and back would get slightly longer in the larger sizes (estimated at about quarter of an inch per chest size)

This is the same for the Short and Long jackets.

How are the Back Length and Sleeve Length Measured?

There are two ways of measuring shirt sleeves.

Sleeve Crown to Cuff is from the end of the shoulder (Crown) to the end of the Cuff.

Or Middle Back to Cuff, which is a straight line measurement from the middle of the collar at the back of the jacket to the end of the cuff.

Most suits are measured with the Crown to Cuff measurement system.

The Back Lengths

The back lengths are measured from the top of the collar to the middle of the bottom of the jacket.

So Now…

Now you know exactly how to measure yourself for a suit jacket. And it’s pretty similar for the trousers too. Its 29” Short, 31” Regular and 33” Long.

Some suits also offer 36” unfinished, this means that the bottoms of the trousers are not hemmed up. However this can be easily solved as local dry cleaners do take trousers up and don’t charge a lot either.

For any other questions

Please call us on 01335 361287, or email support@suitsmen.co.uk.

Don’t forget there is useful information on our other blogs as well as on our Facebook page.

How to Measure yourself for a suit

How to select your suit size

douglas pure wool pinstripe jacket 1 How to Measure yourself for a suit

Getting the measurement right is important

There are few images more enduringly attractive than a man in new suit. Butthe desired effect will quickly be lost if the suit doesn’t fit right. Fortunately, you can use a suit you already own that fits well to help guide you in choosing a new suit that is the correct size.

A suit is measured by its two main parts, i.e. the jacket and the pants. It is important to carefully measure each of the elements of each part to ensure a proper, total fit.

Measuring the jacket

Chest

The chest should always be measured at the fullest part, about three inches underneath the arms. Take the measuring tape and wrap it behind you, pulling it snugly (but not tightly) around to the front.

Arms (Length)

Measuring the arms will determine both the length of sleeve and the jacket. Place the end of the measuring tape at just where the seam of the sleeve meets the jacket and measure all the way to end of the sleeve.

Back

Measuring the back of the jacket is as important as measuring the chest. For the most accurate size reading, begin by folding the collar of the suit jacket up. Place the end of the measuring directly below the seam of the collar and measure in a straight line down to the end of the jacket.

Measuring the trousers

Waist

To measure your waist size, simply take a pair of suit pants that already fit you comfortably and lay them down, fly side up, on a flat surface such as a table or counter (it’s ok if the legs dangle). Button or zip the fly and square the pants as if you were wearing them. Take the measuring tape and measure from one side to the other.

Inside Leg

Measure the inside leg by taking a pair of suit pants with a good length and setting it on a flat surface such as a surface or countertop. Fold the pant legs so that they are sitting atop one another and lift the top leg so that it is straight above the bottom leg (forming one long vertical line). Place the tape measure at the seam of the crotch and measure all the way down to the hem of the pant leg.
