Here at SuitsMen and Rupert The Tailor, everything we do, think and say revolves around menswear and suits. Whether it’s the material that we need to use, the detailing we want to put on our new bespoke suits, or a new style that we think would be fantastic for our site. We think a lot about suits.

 

So when I was relaxing at home last week watching one of my favourite comedies on television, it amazingly turned out to be all about suits! And the next day I just had to show my colleagues what I had seen. The best ‘Suit Song’ I have ever heard.

 

Firstly before I show you the song, a little background information about the character needs to be explained.

 

Barney is a businessman who works for a large banking company. Everything he does and everywhere he goes he has to ‘suit up’ as this is his way of life. He believes everything is better when you are wearing a suit. (We at SuitsMen agree)

 

During this episode, a girl turns him down for a date due to his suit, so he changes to a t-shirt and jeans to show his life is not all about suits. When asked to choose between Suits and his date, Barney’s dilemma begins…

 

 

As shown throughout the song, a suit can brighten up your day, make you feel amazing and make you stand out from the crowd.

We are delighted to announce that Rupert The Tailor has been honored with making a suit for the Famous Jamie Moore of Ringside.

I went up to his gym last week, and was able to get some photos of him wearing his new suit. As you can see, it fits perfectly, and looks fantastic on him. As a boxer (Jamie held the British, Irish and European Middleweight titles until he retired) Jamie struggles to find clothes that fit him properly, so a bespoke suit is vital if he wants to look smart.

 

You will see him on Ringside, on Sky on the 16th April, wearing it for the first time.

Jamie had a suit made in a bright Navy, with a single red button on his cuff, (He asked for this personalisation as it shows his support for his local team, now which one would that be I wonder!)

He went for the slim fit, and a Regal Red lining, opening cuff buttons, and plain front trousers. Inside we added a monogram of “Jamie Moore – Ringside. While the red buttons are not a standard personalisation, if you would like one the same, just drop us a line. All personalisations are free of course.

 

 

We hope to be asked to make a suit for his trip to Afghanistan this summer, when he goes with Sky to work with the Army over there.

But this isn’t set in stone. For those of you who want to alter, change and tweak bits of your suit then that is fine and available using our personalisation page.

 

Change lining colours, piping colours, number of buttons; you can even have a monogram embroided on the inside of your jacket to make it unique and personal.

 

 

The New Addition

 

We have also just added the back length measurement to this. We know what the length would be to make the jacket look great, but everyone is individual and some may want it longer or shorter than we suggest.

 

Even if you want to change something that isn’t on the personalisation page, just let us know and we will do what we can to make your suit, jacket or trousers as perfect as possible.

Rupert the Tailor, Simplicity in Bespoke Clothing

 

 

Many try to avoid the stress and strain of tying their own Bow-Tie. The strange twists and knots of material to get that perfect bow.

 

But it’s not as hard as many people think, to achieve the look they are after. There are many guides around for those who do not know where to start or to refresh those memories that have done it before.

 

So below, SuitsMen have put their own Bow-Tie Guide, easy to follow instructions for your Bow-Tie.

 

The Bow Tie should never be wider than the broadest part of your neck and should not extend past the tips of your shirt collar.

Take a look at the instructions and have a go yourself. Remember you probably won’t get it right straight away, but practice makes perfect!

 

1) Looking into a mirror put the Bow Tie around your neck. You should have the piece on the left hand side 1.5″ lower than the right.

2) Cross the left piece over the top of the right, and then fold it back under and up through the loop.

3) The right hand piece is now hanging down, fold this to the right and then double it back on itself.

4) With your left forefinger and thumb, hold this folded piece secure, and drop the left piece (the other piece) down over the front on the fold.

5) Take the left piece mid way up and pass through the back fold loop.

6) Push the loop through the knot behind the front loop and pull tight. Be careful not to over pull it and try to make it as even as possible!

Once you master the Bow Tie Knot you will be able to master anything! Not forgetting ties and cravats.

If you live outside of the Derbyshire Area, we can still offer you the Measurement Service however there may be a slight cost involved, or if there are enough of you interested in this Service we can arrange a Measuring Day in your Area.

 

So no matter how far away you live this service applies to you!

 

All you need to bring is…
Well, we need yourself present, this isn’t something you can send someone else to do for you.

 

It would be extremely helpful if you bring or wear a pair of your most comfortable trousers. (Suit trousers or work trousers is an extra bonus), as well as bring a jacket that you believe fits you well. It doesn’t matter if it’s too long in the sleeve or too big around the chest – that’s what we are there to sort out.

 

And please wear a shirt or a t-shirt, as this is what we will be measuring over.

 

 

Pictures and Facts
Remember to tell us if you wear your trousers in a specific way, some like them a bit looser or high on the waist.

 

Tell us why you find the right fitting suits difficult, this will help us get your Rupert the Tailor Suit perfect.

 

We may need to take a couple of photos to send to our tailor with your measurements. This is only so we can make sure the suit is perfect for your shape.

 

Your Suit
There is no pressure to order your suit then and there, as this is just the measurement guide. But we will have samples of the suits available if you wish to have a look. We will have swatches and information about them as well.

 

And if you want to order, you can! We will have all the forms and information ready for anyone who cannot wait to get their hands on their perfect suit!

Shrovetide

There is a historic game taking place in a few weeks, which will bring the businesses and inhabitants of Ashbourne to a stand still for 2 days.

Work will be halted, streets closed and shops boarded up to make way for the famous ball that is to be carried.

 For those that are familiar with this tradition, you will automatically understand what I am on about.

For those of you who don’t, welcome to The Royal Shrovetide Football Game.

Basic Explanation

Shrovetide occurs annually on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday and has been played in Ashbourne for the last 900 years (however the exact origins are unknown due to the earliest records being destroyed in a fire).

The ball is thrown up in the centre of town marking the middle of the two goals. These are set 3 miles apart. The team to score the most goals over the 2 days wins for the year.

There is no limit to players or rules as to who can and can’t play, and there are minimal rules as to where the ball can’t go.

The Teams

There are two teams that play, the Up’Ards and the Down’Ards. Up’Ards are those town members born on the North of the Henmore Brook. And the Down’Ards are born on the South.

There is no limit to the number of players, and the aim is to get the ball to their team’s goal.

The teams carry the ball (as best they can) towards their goal; however a ‘hug’ (like a rugby scrum) is formed around the ball preventing much movement.

The ball is rarely kicked however if it does get loose from the hug, it does move and it moves quickly!

Goaling the Ball

The Goaling of the ball takes place at the 2 goals, Clifton Mill for the Down’Ards and Sturston Mill for the Up’Ards.

Even though the Mills themselves are no longer standing, Mill Stones have been left in their place upon which the ball is tapped 3 times by a selected player and a goal is scored for that team.

 The ball is ‘thrown up’ into the crowd on the 2 days at 2pm, if the ball is Goaled before 5pm, a fresh ball is thrown. If it is Goaled after 5pm the day comes to an end. Play ends at 10pm if no balls are Goaled.

The Ball

The ball that is used is neither a football or a rugby ball as the game suggests but a special ball, made of leather and hand painted especially for the occasion. Is it larger than a standard football and is filled with Cork to help it float when it goes into the ponds or rivers throughout the Ashbourne Area.

Balls that are goaled are repainted for the team player who goaled them to keep, with their name and the date.

Balls that are not goaled are repainted and given to the dignitary that threw it up into the crowd.

The Rules (all 6 of them)

1) Committing Murder or manslaughter is prohibited. Unnecessary violence is frowned upon.

2) The ball may not be carried by a motorised vehicle

3) The ball may not be hidden in a bag, coat or rucksack etc.

4) Cemeteries, Churchyards and the town memorial gardens are strictly out of bounds.

5) Playing after 10pm is forbidden

6) To score a goal the ball must be tapped 3 times on the area of the goal.

Many travel down to Ashbourne for the 2 days of play to observe and even play.

If you decide to join, come prepared for any weather, be prepared for the crowds – there will be a lot of people and make sure you know what the game is about. It can move fast.
